Cern Photography: Behind The Lens

Based in London UK, Cern Photography is a combination of passion and exploration that focuses on the world of female modeling.  Join us for an exclusive interview with founder Isabel Cern to know more about the mind, Behind The Lens.

(I.M) How long have you worked in photography?

(I. C) Well my passion with photography had started when I was 20.  I fell in love with a guy who has been doing this, and I decided – as I wanted to impress him – to create better photographs than he…   Now I am 27 so we can say I have been involved in creating photography for 7 years, I do make a decent living at it.

(I.M) As a photographer, what interested you most in the art field?

(I.C) The ability to express myself, without boundaries of reality… The ability to communicate with the world through the language I feel is suitable for me. The joy of creation.

(I.M) As part of your resume you worked as a producer for Drew Gardner, how has his works impacted your vision?

(I.C) Drew is a great photographer and he gave me a lot of technical support, but at the end of the day, our Wonderlands look different.

(I.M) Most photographers strive to create their own signature through experimental techniques, how do you keep your works authentic?

(I.C) I guess I still haven’t found my so called signature, but I am not sure if I have been looking for it.  I am just taking photographs, but maybe they might have a common touch.  You tell me as an audience.

(I.M) Do you work extensively with enhancement software programs?

(I.C) I do and I have to.  People want to look great, don’t they? ;)   The only problem I see with using, or maybe I shall say overdosing PS is that it may ruin the  authenticy of my goal.  Sometimes you don’t know if it’s still a picture or yet a graphic. Digital photography and all post production manipulation programs made of photography kind of simulation of photography.  I might go back to analogue photography one day if everything allows me for this. It became very costly, but I love the mood of old photographs… grain… and the smell of newly developed pictures.

(I.M) How many countries has your work taken you to throughout your career?

(I.C) Not as many as I would like to.

(I.M) Most of your works are focused on female models, is this your choice focus, and if so why?

(I.C) I do prefer to work with female models as I am a female myself. I have a better understanding of femininity. I also consider their bodies as more interesting. Everything is so pleasantly round…

(I.M) You were born in Poland and relocated to London was this specifically to further your education?

(I.C) Yes and no. I graduated in philosophy (my master’s thesis was written on philosophy of art) in Poland, and I also took a few courses on photography.  I have moved to London especially because of the huge amounts of art exhibitions.  Their are great opportunities to find inspiration.

(I.M) When working with models how do you determine which ones best fit your services, are their any guidelines you set to secure the right clients?

(I.C) Except for the look the second stage for me is to find expressive creative bright models. Girls with energy are the best candidates.  I can’t work with silly models. I can not get inspired in their company. I suppose we all need stimulation.

(I.M) What types of projects will you be working on throughout 2010?

(I.C) I would like to focus more on human sexuality (except for portraiture). I am interested in exploration, to work with single people who understand themselves.  From the sophisticated to the simplest of people, their gestures and the mimicry of their faces. At the end of the day I am just voyeur standing behind the camera.
